Biodiversity is Natural Capital

Target: Halt the loss of biodiversity
Biodiversity has a value in itself, but it is also “natural capital” through its provisions of ecosystem services, and Denmark is strongly committed to the EU target to halt the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services by 2020. For that, traditional nature conservation measures through protected areas and protection of species is not enough.

Economic support should favor the environment
Biodiversity concerns need to be integrated across the policies of the production sectors that affect biodiversity especially agriculture fishery and forestry. Denmark believes that a bigger share of the economic support provided through the Common Agricultural Policy and Rural Development should be channeled to actions favoring the environment including biodiversity.

Integration into national policies
We need to make a better case for the economic value of biodiversity so as to integrate the value into national policies and accounts and promote green economy.
