Water

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) under the Ministry of the Environment is responsible for public management of water resources and the marine environment. Each year the Danish EPA publishes a bathing water atlas showing the quality of bathing water in Denmark. Marine environment monitoring, regulation of ship-based pollution, off-shore activities and rat control are also administered by the Agency.

Denmark has since the early 1970s put significant efforts into cleaning up and preventing further degradation of its water quality and the environment. The initiatives have involved massive waste water treatment, banning of hazardous substances in the production, regulating and reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture, cleaning up of old contaminated sites, regulating waste disposal, reducing water use in all sectors and increasing the environmental awareness among the public. Today, we Danes are proud to say that we are among the countries in the world with the cleanest and most well protected environment.
